Albany, NY – While a meeting of Paul Tudor Jones’ Robinhood Foundation takes place in New York City, dozens of activists protested outside and groups gathered in Albany to release a new report detailing Jones’ extreme wealth and influence over New York State politics.
The report, the fifth in a series of reports released by Hedge Clippers, a coalition of community groups, details how Jones’ contributes to political campaigns in order to win favorable policies. In fact, he’s donated over $1.6 million in New York State and as a key ally of Governor Cuomo and the Senate Republicans has backed pro-charter school organizations. “At a time when the state is already on trial for constitutional violations in students’ education, it is very distressing that Governor Cuomo’s administration has a policy of deleting emails within 90 days and they need to stop,” said Billy Easton, Executive Director of the Alliance for Quality Education. “Hedge fund managers like Paul Tudor Jones have essentially bought and paid for Andrew Cuomo’s education policies. We are asking the Governor to desist from destroying any communications with hedge fund managers or the PACs they are financing because the public has a right to know who is really calling the shots on public education policy and funding.”
The Alliance for Quality Education also released a letter sent to Governor Cuomo asking him to desist from destroying any email communications related to his administrations’ advocacy of education policy or related to school funding. The letter can be found here: http://www.aqeny.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/Desist-deleting-Emails-Final.pdf
The Hedge Clippers groups also announced that they will be traveling to Paul Tudor Jones’ residence in Greenwich, CT this Saturday to protest his undue influence over New York politics.
“We’re in a new Gilded Age and Paul Tudor Jones is one of the modern-day robber barons that the public needs to know,” said Michael Kink, Executive Director of the Strong Economy for All Coalition. “His extraordinary wealth, his oversized influence on New York politics, and his disturbing pattern of racially coded and anti-immigrant ideals all stand in contrast to the politics and policies that would get us a government that works for everyone, not just the super wealthy.”
“Billionaires like Paul Tudor Jones shouldn’t have any more influence in Albany than a public school parent, but he’s able to buy huge tax breaks and control public policy,” said Karen Scharff, Executive Director of Citizen Action of New York. “Governor Cuomo’s aggressive push for a radical education agenda centered on privatizing our public schools is evidence of how much control hedge fund executives really have in Albany.”
