NYC Needs Solutions-Oriented Leadership To Navigate the Complexities of This Moment

NEW YORK , N.Y. (September 13, 2023) – In response to recent statements by Mayor Adams calling for another round of cuts, the Alliance for Quality Education‘s Executive Director, Jasmine Gripper, issued the following statement:

“The mayor’s fear-based approach to dealing with families seeking asylum reveals a lack of proactive solutions. New York City and its people, however, have a history of resilience and welcoming migrants, which has consistently made the city stronger. We believe that New York City can overcome these challenges, but it will require a mayor who’s able to rise to the occasion.

Mayor Adams’ proposed cuts come following five rounds of budget reductions since taking office, indicating a broader trend of disinvestment in public schools. These cuts are not solely related to asylum seekers but have been part of an ongoing effort to defund public schools.

As champions of a well-funded child care, public school, and after-school care system for all students, regardless of their background or origin, we demand that city services are fully staffed and fully funded. More cuts will only limit opportunities and impose substantial barriers on students’ learning.

Like all New Yorkers, people seeking asylum want safety, stability, and better opportunities for themselves and their families. We urge Mayor Adams to adopt an inclusive, solutions-oriented vision for NYC schools and communities. This vision must prioritize investments in well-funded educational services that address the diverse needs of all of its students. Let’s pave the way for a shared future where every student has equitable access to quality education and the opportunity to thrive. New Yorkers don’t need a leader that whines about the problems of our city; we need a mayor who protects our most essential New Yorkers, our children.”
