Adoption of FSF Recommendations Will Advance Equity for NYC’s Students

NEW YORK, N.Y. (January 23, 2023) — In response to the announcement today from New York City Mayor Eric Adams and New York City Department of Education (DOE) Chancellor David C. Banks proposing improvements to the Fair Student Funding (FSF) formula, public education advocacy organization Alliance for Quality Education released the following statement:

“We applaud Mayor Adams and Chancellor Banks for taking up these two recommendations of the Fair Student Funding Working Group, which convened in 2022, in an effort to better address equity,” said Jasmine Gripper, co-chair of the Fair Student Funding Working Group, and Executive Director of the Alliance for Quality Education.

“Adding a weight for schools serving students in temporary housing and for schools with higher concentrations of students with needs will help ensure that more children and schools have adequate resources to meet the needs of their students.

“This is a tweak of the formula. We encourage the New York City Department of Education to continue to explore ways that the formula could be even more equitable, by conducting a further, more holistic review of the FSF formula.

“While making the formula more equitable is important, it is equally important that the Mayor and Chancellor reverse their recent trend of cutting the city’s funding for public schools.”
