Our public schools are under attack! Billionaires are trying to use their influence to push for funding cuts and a voucher scam that’s going to hurt our public schools and line their pockets. We need your help to stop them.
Right now, Congress is pursuing massive federal funding cuts to essential education, health and human services and at the same time considering costly legislation that would transfer over $136 billion in public funds to private schools. The Educational Choice for Children Act (ECCA) would give an unprecedented tax giveaway to the ultra wealthy by using our students as cover. This voucher scam would devastate our already under-resourced schools, and send taxpayer funds to schools that could discriminate against students and would not be accountable to any educational standards. If just 5% of public school students in CD-2 left to attend a private school with a voucher, CD-2 public schools would lose over $123 million in funding. CD-2’s students include 19,461 students with disabilities, 17,237 English Language Learners and over 53,000 students who are eligible for federal Free and Reduced Lunch.
Our congressional districts depend heavily on federal funding for public education. If the proposed cuts pass, schools will close, teachers and staff will lose their jobs, children won’t have access to the special education services they deserve, and more. But Congress has the power to protect public schools and students by preventing any cuts to education in the budget reconciliation and appropriations processes.
We need our members of Congress to step up and lead their colleagues to defend public schools from cuts and vouchers. It is not too late. Call your representative and urge them to tell Speaker Mike Johnson and the Committee on Education and the Workforce that there can be no federal vouchers and no reductions in public school funding.
