Education equity is under threat in Schenectady

Schenectady City School District is deciding on next year’s budget — and the Interim Superintendent wants to make cuts. On the chopping block are positions that are vital to furthering equity and culturally responsive education in Schenectady.

The Interim Superintendent has proposed a plan for staff reductions that  would eliminate the Office of Curriculum and Instruction. This vital team coordinates remote learning and Culturally Responsive Education. These roles are central to implementing  the District’s vision and mission of equity and inclusion. Especially now, as the pandemic deepens the structural inequities in our communities, we cannot take any steps backward in achieving our full vision of justice in the Schenectady City School District. Send an email to the school board members and Interim Superintendent now.

Schenectady, like many school districts, has financial reserves that it can rely on in an emergency. This is an emergency. The District can avoid cuts altogether if it taps into these reserves.

The Schenectady City School Board will make a final decision tomorrow, Wednesday, May 19. We need the board members to urge the Interim Superintendent to preserve the office of Curriculum and instruction in Schenectady in the district’s budget. Send an email to the school board members and Interim Superintendent now.
