Programs for high school students at risk of dropping out face ‘catastrophic’ funding cliff

Pending funding cuts to the Learning to Work program in New York City could lead to the loss of critical services and jobs for approximately 15,000 students enrolled in Young Adult Borough Centers and transfer schools. Learning to Work, which pairs alternative schools with community organizations, provides additional staff to ensure students’ attendance, connect them with social services, and support them in crafting college and career plans. Nearly 70% of the program’s budget comes from one-time federal pandemic relief funds, and without an infusion of city funding, the loss of support and jobs is imminent, affecting vulnerable populations of students, including those facing housing instability or involvement in the criminal justice system.
